SS United States Oceanliner Sails into the Sunset

The United States moored at Pier 82 in South Philadelphia. (Author photo) The iconic American Oceanliner, the SS United States, has sadly sailed into the sunset. A marvel of American engeneering, safety and speeed, the liner was launched in 1952 and sailed the North Atlantic routes during the 1950's and 1960's making 800 Ocean crossings. But air travel made the ship obsolete and the liner was retired and later sent to pier 82 in Philadelphia where she spent nearly 30 years! There was hope the ship would be saved and turned into a hotel or Museum but that never happened. Now the Liner nicknamed the Big U is being towed to Alabama where it will become a sunken reef.
